So, being a huge WWE fan it seemed only appropriate to predict this Sunday’s Wrestlemania 32 PPV. This year is a little different – so many top stars are out injured and some of the matches have a ‘scraping the barrel feel’. However, that being said, I sense a change coming so I’ll elaborate more on what I believe to be on the horizon. Let’s see on Sunday how many I get right as I’ll be live tweeting the entire show!
Many say Wrestlemania is the Superbowl of Wrestling but I disagree. The Superbowl is the Wrestlemania of American Football. Call me a little biased but it’s true. There’s an electric excitement in the air and quite frankly, anything can happen. It’s no secret WWE have been struggling in the ratings and fans are getting increasingly frustrated at the way the talent is being used. NXT has fast become the brand to watch and they have a somewhat never ending stream of amazing guys and girls who are, without a shadow of a doubt the future of WWE. However, on the main roster things aren’t so peachy. There are an unhealthy amount of top stars out injured (Seth Rollins, Cesaro, John Cena, Randy Orton and Nikki Bella to name a few) and with fan favourite Daniel Bryan retiring from in-ring competition, the roster is looking pretty sparse and many of the story lines aren’t what the fans want. Ultimately, this is a fan driven form of entertainment as ticket sales and tv ratings are paramount.
This brings me to a pretty obvious issue – who should be getting a push? Many believe Roman Reigns is being pushed too hard by management and this is causing quite a significant amount of backlash from fans. The reaction to Reigns is very hit/miss – he gradually built up a pretty solid positive reaction at the back end of 2015 after winning the Royal Rumble in the January and headlining Wrestlemania 31. However, in such a fast paced environment, the boos have returned. I think it boils down to fans wanting certain superstars to be given the opportunity to main event with guys like Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler taking a backseat.
It’s not all doom and gloom however as many stars have stepped up to the plate and really solidified their place on the main roster with The New Day, Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens and 3 of the 4 Horsewomen of NXT being the main stand-outs, delivering knockout performances in the ring and on the mic. Some of these guys wouldn’t have had as much air-time should the roster not be filled with long-term injuries.
One division that is certainly not suffering is the divas division – it goes from strength to strength with the women of WWE (and NXT) finally getting the recognition, airtime and lengthy matches they deserve.
So, with that ‘little’ overview aside, let’s get to the predictions shall we?
US Championship Title Match
Kalisto (c) v. Ryback
Sadly, the US title hasn’t had the same impact since John Cena and his open challenge ended as it doesn’t have that prestigious feel that it should. This match is the typical ‘small guy’ vs ‘big guy’ bout and quite frankly, I’m not interested in the slightest! Ryback is one of the most overrated guys in recent years and I find him to be a very 90s wrestler. Y’know, the ones who are built like a tank and that’s about it. Kalisto however, is a great lucha style wrestler and deserves the recent push he’s been getting but I wonder how much longer that will be.
Prediction: Ryback, because I sense a push coming for him and his new attitude should be enough to beat Kalisto and win only his second championship.
10-Diva Tag Match
The Total Divas (Brie Bella, Natalya, Paige, Alicia Fox & Eva Marie) vs. Team B.A.D & Blonde (Lana, Naomi, Tamina, Summer Rae & Emma)
I absolutely love that we finally have 2 legitimate, non-playboy pillow fight diva’s matches at ‘Mania. This match is intriguing, mainly because we have never seen Lana in a match and this is her in-ring debut. The inclusion of Eva Marie gives this match something extra – no matter what, he gets a reaction but she’s also a heel on a team of baby faces…let that one sink in. This match should be good to showcase the divas not in the title hunt. On a sad note, this could well be Brie Bella’s final match before retiring and knowing Nikki isn’t by her side, makes it all the more sad.
Prediction: Eva will screw her Total Diva castmates allowing Team B.A.D & Blonde to pick up the win.
Tag Team Match
The Usos vs. The Dudley Boyz
After turning on The Usos in February, the Dudley Boyz have been a thorn in Jimmy & Jey’s side leading up to Wrestlemania. This match lacks a stipulation for me (umm Tables Match anyone?) and I think that’s why it’s on the pre-show and not further up the card.
Prediction: The Dudley Boyz, to keep the feud alive.
3-on-4 Handicap Match
The New Day vs. The League of Nations (Sheamus, Alberto Del Rio, Wade Barrett & Rusev)
I’m not a fan of The League of Nations but The New Day are WWE gold. Everything they do is so over with the crowd its inevitable they’ll walk out of Wrestlemania as the top baby faces of the company.
Prediction: Your 2 time…WWE Tag Team Champions…The New Day!
André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal
This match is great because it allows guys lower down the pecking order to get a Wrestlemania moment but I sense a few surprise entrants into the match.
Prediction: A surprise entrant.
AJ Styles vs. Chris Jericho
…Part 757! Don’t get me wrong, these two always put on amazing matches but they’ve faced each other numerous times since AJ’s debut at Royal Rumble and surely this needs to be the ending of their feud.
Prediction: AJ Styles will have a Wrestlemania moment.
Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Championship
Kevin Owens (c) vs. Sami Zayn vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. The Miz vs. Stardust vs. Sin Cara vs. Zack Ryder
Last year’s IC title ladder match top-notch and this year will be no different. There’s a good mix of wrestling styles to give the match a bit of flair. I do think Stardust, Sin Cara and Zack Ryder are just there to make up the numbers but it’ll be a hard fought victory for whomever walks away champion.
Prediction: I don’t see Kevin Owens walking away from ‘KO Mania’ with the title and I don’t think he’ll be particularly happy when it’s his former best friend and nemesis, Sami Zayn.
Triple Threat Match for the Diva’s Championship
Charlotte (c) vs. Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch
This match will 100% steal the show. It’s not a shock that these three divas have propelled the division into a new era, they know each other inside and out and have unrivalled chemistry. This is the match I’m most excited for and I do hope it goes on for a good 20 minutes. My only concern is that dastardly Ric Flair!
Prediction: It’s too obvious for Sasha to win so I’m going to say Becky Lynch will steal the title and an arm. Then on RAW a new era begins…with a new championship.
Hell in a Cell
Shane McMahon vs. The Undertaker
A match that came out of nowhere but with each passing week has me more excited than the main event. This has the potential to be a ‘Mania classic and I really can’t call the winner. There’s a lot riding on the outcome – if Shane wins, he controls RAW and that’s something I think we can all get behind. However, that means ‘Taker will no longer wrestle on the grandest stage of them all. There are so many potential outcomes but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that ‘Taker will screw Vince McMahon for whom he has been his most loyal employee.
Prediction: Shane McMahon though I’m not sure how but he will control RAW and the brand split will return.
No Holds Barred Street Fight
Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar
This match has the potential to be completely balls-out but in a PG era, I worry this won’t have the same feel that it would have 10 years ago. That being said, Dean Ambrose is fast becoming ‘the guy’ and what better way to solidify that than going toe-to-toe with The Beast?
Prediction: Dean Ambrose, though I’m not entirely sure how he will manage it.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match
Triple H (c) vs. Roman Reigns
This might not be the main event everyone wants but it’s the one that makes the most sense. The feud between Triple H and Roman Reigns had been slow burning for a long time until Reigns pummelled his boss at Survivor Series and it’s all kicked off ever since. I suspect this will be changed to a No-DQ on the night and I can see The Rock and a returning sooner than expected Seth Rollins.
Prediction: Rollins returns to screw his mentor on the grandest stage of them all and Roman Reigns will get his Wrestlemania moment, whether you like it or not.
I also sense a few more returns – John Cena, Cesaro and….Kurt Angle. This Wrestlemania could be salvageable after all.
Are you excited for ‘Mania?
Love, Kate xo
