I’m a lipstick addict and I am always excited to try new releases. So when the new Rimmel The Only 1 Matte Lipsticks* landed on my doorstep I was down to give them a swatch right away! I received 9 new shades in various colours and of course, I’ve tried and swatched them all.
Each lipstick comes in a classic Rimmel red packaging with the shade colour around the base so it’s easy to find your favourite shade. I’m not a huge fan of the packaging but it’s what’s inside that counts right?
The bullets of the lipsticks are cut at a 45 degree angle and they are a blunt but circular shape. I find applying with this shape has its pros and cons. I think the product applies with ease to the centre of the lips but the edges can be a little trickier. I prefer pointed bullets as they fit into the harder to reach areas of the lips much easier. That being said, changing the angle of your application helps.
The formula, though matte is extremely hydrating and comfortable on the lips. I don’t find any of the shades drying and there’s a little bit of slip so you don’t feel like you can’t move your lips which is always a bonus. I love how the shades all apply the colour with instant impact rather than having to build up the colour. These lipsticks last really well on the lips but did need a top up after food and drink.
So let’s run down the shades…
Leader of the Pink is a bubblegum shade and whilst I’ve grown out of that type of colour, I was surprised at how much I liked it upon application. The colour applied opaque right away and left no streaks.
Call the Shots is a raspberry pink shade that’s incredibly wearable. I love the subtle vibrancy of this shade and I found it to be very flattering on the lips. It applied evenly and was immediately opaque.
Take the Stage is a true red. I found this a bit of a struggle to apply and I think it definitely needed a lip liner for even application, particularly around the edges.
High Flyer is similar to Salute but is deeper and more muted. This is a very flattering shade that works all year round and adds a little oomph to the lips. This applied with ease, I found this to be the case with the lighter shades.
Trendsetter is the nudist shade of the bunch and it’s somewhat cool toned. In the bullet I wasn’t sure of this would be a little too draining for me but I actually really enjoyed wearing it. You can never have enough nude shades in my opinion! This, as with the other lighter shades applied perfectly.
Look Who’s Talking is one of the deeper shades and I actually rather liked the colour on me. It’s more like it a red toned brown which on paper, should not work for me but I found it quite flattering. Sadly, the formula was a bit off and it applied quite streaky.
The Matte Factor is similar to Call the Shots but is a deeper, more red toned raspberry shade. I love this colour though it’s a little bit of a faff to apply but with a bit of lip liner I know I won’t go far wrong.
I think the formula of most of these is lovely with the lighter shades being the best of the bunch. The only downside, other than a few being streaky is the scent. I’m not a fan of the watermelon scent but thankfully it isn’t too offensive when wearing.
The new Only 1 Matte Lipsticks are £6.99 each and available now. They are £4.99 for a limited time at Boots.
Have you tried these yet?
