Ah that beloved time of year – The Oscars.
Honestly, I get so excited for the ceremony but most importantly (other than the actual awards themselves) the dresses. I stayed up pretty late last night – hardcore raver – to see all the dresses. Actually that’s half a lie, I was waiting for my future husband Michael Fassbender and his ginger man beard to appear.
There was plenty of nudes on the red carpet this year but they were good’uns – lots of sparkle and beautiful silhouettes. So, if you want to see my picks in more detail…

This was my dress of the night and how fitting for a Best Actress winner. Cate Blanchett looked absolutely divine in this Armani Prive number. I mean hello, have you seen all the embellishments! I loved how there was an air of old school Hollywood about the dress and hair but the earrings we’re kinda funky and not what I expected with the dress. I didn’t think last years lilac Givenchy dress could be topped but it was.
As soon as I saw this stunning Prada gown on Lupita Nyong’o – I knew it would soon be united with a gold statue. How gorgeous does the “Nairobi Blue” look against her skin tone? Modern day Cinderella right here. Lupita has looked incredible all awards season and this has to be the most worthy of The Oscars. Plus that headband was amaze. I was so happy that she won on the night too.
Uh huh honey. Kate Hudson slayed in this sensational Atelier Versace gown and cape. It fit her body like a glove and the beading detail was so delicately beautiful. Kate always brings her A-game even when she’s just a presenter. The hair and make up is effortless and suits the dress beautifully. An up do would have made this look harsh.
So glad Jennifer Lawrence brought back the red dress and the back necklace – two previous ceremonies themes rolled into one. I adored Jen’s low cut Calvin Klein dress back in 2011 and this peplum Dior number did not disappoint. Simple but effective and that back necklace was gorgeous. I wasn’t too keen on the hair, it felt a little too pouffy for me but her hair is pretty short at the moment so it’s harder to style despite growing considerably since the Golden Globes.
Oh marshmallow! It was lovely to see Kristen Bell on the red carpet this year and her Roberto Cavalli dress looked very ice-queen and so appropriate for Frozen. I particularly loved the bottom half of the dress as it draped beautifully. Her hair looked so cute and prom-like without being over the top.
Well hey there mama-to-be! Olivia Wilde dressed her bump to perfection in this sleek, black Maison Valentino gown with white detailing. Pregnancy and the red carpet can be struggle (I’m taking to you Olivia Pope) but this just fit in all the right places. I’d probably say Olivia had the best hair and make up of the night – loved the 60s vibe she had going on.
I totally felt that Angelina Jolie was giving K-Mid a run for her money last night – her hair and make up was perfection, beautiful smokey eye and healthy, shiny locks. The Elie Saab dress wasn’t what I’d usually expect from Angie but the sequins and colour suited her so well. It had a lovely mix of sophisticated sexiness about it that I don’t really see anyone else pulling off.
Ahh Goddess of Love, Goddess of Love. Lady Gaga slayed in this Versace dress – it was very Gaga, eye catching and different whilst remaining respectful to the occasion. I loved the shade of the dress and LG had curves for daysss. The scarf was a fab, sassy touch and totally distracted from the wig line. Almost.
As like Kate Hudson, Naomi Watts is another lady who never gets it wrong on the red carpet. This white, textured Calvin Klein dress was perfect on her body and her effortless hair and pop of colour on the lips tied everything together beautifully. I particularly liked the necklace as it wasn’t too flashy but rather edgy instead.
Another divine embellished dress, this time it’s a Reem Acra number as worn by the beautiful Jenna Dewan-Tatum. The bodice was beautiful, just the right amount of boob and it sashayed into these soft ruffles. I loved that Jenna went for a messy up do so the dress could be displayed in all it’s glory. Who’d have thought she was pregnant at last years ceremony.
Jennifer Garner always looks so sophisticated and well put together and this year was no exception. Her Oscar De La Renta gown was simple but beautifully quirky in a 20s kinda way. Her hair was beautiful, those soft waves cascading down the side – swish. I think this look would go under the radar as it’s not massively showy but really deserves a mention.
Anne Hathaway was rocking the short hair again but my was this a complete upgrade to last years nipple-gate powder pink number. This edgy Gucci dress was beautiful and it’s nice to see her doing something a little more daring, even in black. The detailing on this dress is just stunning and doesn’t swamp Anne’s tiny frame at all.
Glad to see Sandra Bullock has gone from strength to strength since that minor mishap of a colour blocked dress at the Golden Globes. I loved the design of this Alexander McQueen dress, especially the crossed over draping to the front. The colour, sure was a bit safe but it looked beautiful on ol’ Sandy. Her hair and ear cuff were well matched too.
Glad there was some green on the red carpet thanks to the mega talented Idina Menzel (Rachel’s mum guys!) in this beautiful forrest green Vera Wang number. I love how structured it was to her body and gradually got bigger towards the bottom. The necklace was simple but tied in with the dress beautifully.
Sadly, no crazy dress/trouser combo from Emma Watson this time but another two piece – both the top and skirt are from Vera Wang and whilst very simple, looked beautiful with Emma’s effortless style. I think a necklace would have spoilt this look but the pop of red and messy hair worked wonderfully.
